A Note on Today's Costume Jewelry
Fashion jewelry is targeted towards teenagers and young adults. Therefore, fashion or costume jewelry as it is also called, must be affordable and must follow current trends in the world of fashion. It is critically important that each piece cost no more than a few tens of dollars each. This is because the target audience will likely want to buy multiple pieces – one to go with each outfit, as well as to mix and match and create a variety of looks. This concept is quite different from the world of fine jewelry where emphasis is on delicate and intricate craftsmanship, and materials that will hold their value for several decades. While the idea behind fine jewelry is to own a piece that becomes a family heirloom and can be handed down from generation to generation, when it comes to fashion jewelry, the goal is to spend a few bucks to buy something that is considered hip by today’s fashion standards, and then discard and buy another piece when winds of change sweep over the ever changing landscape of fashion jewelry!
Base metals and copper in particular are commonly used in creating fashion jewelry such as copper pendants, bracelets, and necklaces. Copper may be used in two forms. In some cases, copper is plated with a more expensive such as silver to give the piece of jewelry the appearance of being more expensive than actually is. Scrupulous sellers will always let you know if the piece that you are looking at is sterling silver or silver plated on copper. Clearly, the difference is significant as is the price! The other option is to use copper in its natural form. The warm rose color of copper beautiful in itself and can be used to make beads, bracelets, chains, and settings for rings and pendants. The color of this metal allows it to be matched with opaque gemstones such as obsidian and turquoise as well as with transparent to translucent gems such as quartz and peridot. Depending on the designer’s choosing, copper jewelry can be made to be trendy and hip or have a more classic look. Copper jewelry can also be created for men and women. As you would expect, women’s fashions generally call for more delicate and ornate designs, while men’s jewelry typically has a more rustic and stout look.
Another emerging trend in today’s fashion jewelry is to combine materials that are inherently different from each other, to create designs are considered to be contemporary and cutting edge. One such option is to combine the quintessential beauty of a freshwater pearl bracelet with stark black onyx beads. The onyx beads in this application are usually not rounded, but instead are flat, oval, or even angular to add a certain edge to the piece. Graduated onyx beads cut in an elongated diamond shape are sometimes added as the pendant beads at the base of a necklace.

Costume Jewelry Values
Sperry Jewelry-does anyone know much about it?
I bought some jewelry at a consignment shop, and noticed that one of the chains had a tag that said "Sperry". All that I could find on the Web was that it's from the 1950's. Does it have any value, or is it just costume jewelry?
It is costume jewellery, but because it is collectible and vintage, it does have some value. The actual value would be determined by it's condition and rarity, especially among collectors.
